My reason for this web page is a personal one. I became a quadriplegic as the result of a careless driver 12 years ago. Although I try to be as independent and self reliant as I possibly can, it is not always possible. Shortly after my graduation from the University of Rochester in 1991, I trained intensively for two weeks to learn the necessary commands to control a service dog.

When I brought him to the apartment building where I live he immediately made a change in my life. Achilles opened the front door, and I was able to for the first time since the accident exit my apartment on my own. Achilles has given me the capability to continue with my education. No longer do I worry if I have dropped a pencil, a folder, or a book. Achilles readily retrieves these things for me. I am able to work and study more independently. I have noticed a change in my life and within myself. Achilles has replaced my frustration and desperation with capability and security.

Unfortunately, the nursing agency that supplies my personal attendants did not recognize Achilles worth, and refused to assist me with his basic care. I asked the Mounted Patrol for their help. During the past five years they have unselfishly given of their time. Their kindness includes from bathing Achilles,giving him medicine and dropping off dog food to giving me rides to the veterinarian or even to school if I miss the bus. They have become my friends.

I am currently attending Rochester Institute of Technology and am a graduate student in Information Technology. With the skills I have learned so far, I want to share my gratitude with the world.
